Causeway Art Studios
DETAILS AND FEES WHEN A WATERCOLOUR PAINTING IS COMMISSIONED FROM SUPPLIED PHOTOGRAPHS
COSTS These will break down into four sections.
  • Your cost incurred when taking and supplying the photos (Perhaps 20 in total)
  • My fee
For a figure please e-mail me, or phone, for discussion about your particular request
  • My expenses- Paper and paints will be negligible. And the only other cost will be for post and packaging of the final art work (Which might be quite pricey if the mailing tube is sent by airmail).
  • Your cost incurred to matt/mount and frame the art work
It will work better for both of us if the framing is done at your end.

TAKING THE PHOTOS

Have you some reasonable photos of your property already? If so I may be able to work from them.

Not got any suitable photos? Then here's what we do. To start with, please would you supply a few "General view" photos of the preferred view (ordinary sized prints- roughly 15 x 10cm. not slides/transparencies) . In other words please don't send photos of the "back porch" if it isn't going to be in your/my drawing.

When deciding what view you would like, if possible avoid taking the photo full-onto-the-front of the building, but if possible, include a little of the side too. This gives me a better chance to add depth and render shadow.

If you are one of the new breed of Digital camera owners then by all means use that for the photos but if sending the results to me over the Internet please optimise them so the file size is not enormous- which takes ages to download,

Polaroid photos also might just about work, but I would prefer ordinary old-fashioned prints.

Assuming your camera takes reasonable shots, use that, don't bother going to the expense of getting the photos professionally taken. We can work it out between us.

Usually you would take the photo "Landscape" i.e. lengthways,   But don't forget you can tip the camera on it's side (if you live in a tall building perhaps, or I am painting a church?) and photograph it "portrait"
Please don't use a wide angle lens. If you cannot get it all in the one photo, then STAY IN EXACTLY THE SAME SPOT, turn slightly, and take another photo which embraces the rest of your place. Take three or four if need be. Make sure they overlap a little.

Please don't make this photography an onerous task. Just remember I know nothing of your dwelling. That water barrel which you grew up with, the funny slope of the roof, the climbing rose bush beside the window... all these I know nothing about unless they appear in your photos. Oh yes and if it isn't in focus then beware I might think your condo really does look fuzzy and I'll paint it that way!.
Once I have seen your first batch of "General view" photos, then I will probably reply to you asking for photographs of particular details.
I CAN MISS THINGS OUT Yes don't forget that when painting, I can miss out that ugly antenna, or next door's yard-barn/shed. And of course the neighbouring property can be either missed out completely or blended into the back ground.

FOLIAGE Feel free to include a little of the yard/garden in your photographs. I like trees and bushes, they help to soften a painting and are useful to emphasise the building.
WEATHER Your painting doesn't have to be in glorious sunshine. How about a snow storm, (Make a nice Christmas card!) or backed by big dark thunder clouds? The choice is yours.
YOUR ADDRESS Obviously I will need your home or business address and also your home or business phone number (which ever is more convenient)

MY ADDRESS And of course you will need my address for sending the photos.
You can get these details from the "About" page but to save you hopping back and forth here it is again.

WHAT WILL YOU GET FOR YOUR MONEY?
I will supply a watercolour painting
approximately 13.5 x 10 inches (35 x 25cm)This size is negotiable
It will be on 300 gm water-colour paper.
There will be a clear margin of at least 0.5cm around the edge for matt/framing.
Although the painting will be quite "stable" I suggest you get it framed quite quickly to save it getting damaged.
The painting will be covered in tissue paper and lightly rolled up. It will be despatched in a 3 inch mailing tube

DATED? I will sign the work but would you also like it dated? And if so what system should I use? USA which is Month-Day-Year or UK which is Day-Month-Year

I Suggest you print this page out to study at your leisure
