"Trompe l'oeil" - Described
to me once as "Painting in stereo". Painting an object so realistically
that the viewer is tricked into thinking it exists in three dimensions.
When the Coleraine (Northern Ireland) Town Hall was being refurbished in
the early 90's the contractors sheeted over the main entrance area with
boards.
So I painted a replica of the
original doors and coat of arms on the sheeting. And yes people actually
went up to it to enter. Of course if one walked to the right of where the
photo was taken, then the illusion is broken because you expect to see the
thickness of the left-hand door- and you don't.
