SCENERY PAINTING FOR THE AMATEUR MUSICAL THEATRE and PANTOMIME
ALADDIN Bushmills - page three
Designed and painted by Brian Willis. Scenery built by Kenny McKay and Trevor McKendry.
Performed by Bushmills Primary School PTA and friends.(2003)
A five year old pupil of Bushmills Primary School stands "Outside the Palace". This is made of four flats clipped together, with depth achieved by trompe l'oeil painting of perspective and shadows. The straight line where the flats meet the floor gives the illusion away.

A Book Flat forming part of the "Cave Interior" The boy is resting his hand on the profile edge of the front flat, behind which is hinged the return. (See where the flats rest on the floor)

At the top of the flat can be seen the trap which slides open to reveal Abanazer, who pops his head through this hole to chastise Aladdin for not bringing him the lamp. This trap merges into the rest of the painting when lit more subtly for the actual performance.

The young boy featured is the son of one of the stage construction team. On several occasions he accompanied Dad to the hut where we were building the sets and made himself very useful by collecting the off-cuts of wood and bent nails to put in the waste bin and even wielded a dustpan and brush to keep the place tidy. Dad's are messy creatures when building caves.(There are more caves later in these pages)
