Cottage in the Square Aud. Rt. A trompe l'oeil painted on flat sheets (See edge on the far right) In the foreground is a flat lying on its front. You can see the way they are constructed. The support framing is 2" x 1" rough sawn laths, strengthened with triangle corners of board. Nothing in this photo to give you scale but the doorway is full size.

The joins of the boards are pretty obvious here. Namely the left hand building is one sheet, the thatch and chimney of the main cottage is another, the flowers and window the other and finally the door and its left wall is the forth sheet.

There's "heather" amongst the rocks at the bottom. I use a big fat wallpaper brush for heather. Dip all the bristles in a heather colour then dip one edge into white. Then I dab this two-coloured brush at the board to give the individual sprigs with a highlight on one side.
