MASKING TAPE

Once the outlines have been transferred. I then put masking tape on them where I need to paint across. Like these skyscrapers for instance. I can now paint a sky right across these knowing that I can pull off the tape once my sky has been completed to reveal my buildings again.

I don't put the tape actually on the charcoal lines,- it wouldn't stick for one thing. I place the tape on the inside of the line. (Not the outside which would make the building bigger than originally drawing)

I have deliberately altered the contrast of this photo in the hopes of making the tape clearer for you to see.

Before I start painting a section I wash off the grid lines with a sponge in that area with clean water. The grid lines are inclined to show through any clean colour parts such as a light blue sky. Not too much water as it will dribble down and unstick the masking tape.

Here's another example. The trees in the foreground of the lake. Once the tape was on I was able to run back and forth with my wide brush with impunity - not worrying about having to remember where I have my trees. This photo shows I have removed the tape.

I remove the tape when it is still wet with paint on it - comes off easier that way. Tip- To save gettting tangled up in sticky tape I hold a short length of 2" x 1" scrap timber in one hand and stick the removed ribbons of tape onto that.

Of course these shapes are only a rough outline and I will not stick rigidly to them when it comes to the artwork
