SCENERY PAINTING FOR THE AMATEUR MUSICAL THEATRE and PANTOMIME
A CHRISTMAS VILLAGE- page three.
Designed, built and painted by Brian Willis
A series of Christmas plays performed by the pupils of Macosquin Primary School. Co. Londonderry - December 2005

Detail of Audience Rt. Wing.
I tackled this in layers. putting in the "shelves" first, then the "toys". Once satisfied with the layout, I then put in the green glazing bars, trying to avoid obliterating the main toy elements. Next I painted the snow resting on these bars - again only where it was convenient! Then some bottle glass reflections. If I was to do it again I would avoid the bottle glass around the horse's muzzle. Also I went a bit mad with the snow at the bottom and it looks as if it has broken through the glass and encroached right into the shop window display.

To make the lamp stand out I "knocked back" the window behind by scrubbing on white paint with a dry brush. Finally I painted in the lamp-post, and to add to the illusion of depth I painted in some hanging icicles above the front of the window.

Below the words "Toy Shop" on the sign is my name. I always try to slip in my name somewhere in the scenery for a show.
