The Brigands' Lair Here's an old black and white photo of one of my designs from a 1969 production. (Now that wasn't yesterday!). I love stalactites and stalagmites in scenery. They make marvelous silhouettes and cast wonderful interesting shadows, This scene includes a couple of borders too. There is a cut-out cloth at the back, and together with the wings, appear to give layer upon layer of cave features. The stage crew also made several three dimensional stalagmites ("Mites" crawl up) out of plaster on a wire netting frame - and blooming heavy lumps they were too.

My original concept drawing for this scene. If I have time, I do these sketches for the producer and stage team. Hey this is strange, I end up here with a coloured drawing and a black and white photo of the actual scenery. Shouldn't have this been the other way round? Note the cut-out cloth at the back. When backcloths are past their prime, don't throw them out but use for cut-outs.
