SCENE FIVE - "Suburban back Garden - Music and Dance of Spheres"
ANNLAUG. I have completely re-written and added considerably to the whole of this page (re-write and additions made on 7th July 2007)

PATRICK In reality the original acrylic painting of this backcloth is much more vivid and colourful than depicted here. You probably still have the original if you want to re-photograph.
NOTES TO ACCOMPANY ABOVE PAINTING.
A COLOURED SKY

Those bands of colour in the sky I painted as fast as I could so they all blended together whilst the paint was still wet. If you are a dab hand with a spray gun then here's your chance to demonstrate your prowess. Me? I am useless with it. I tried it once. I wanted mysterious clouds over Bali Ha'I (the island in the musical "South Pacific). 'Trouble was by the time I had finished wielding the spray gun it looked like smoke from a bonfire where the locals had been burning car tyres !

LIGHT
This is the big happy ending, so the plan for this backcloth was to infer a bright light emanating from the sky (After all the Sky is the ‘hidden chorus’ in this Musical). To achieve this I decided my light source was to be in the centre of the canvas. So, once I had painted my cloth, complete with coloured arcs and comet, and let it dry, I then used the ragged edge of a broken sponge to dab on a mist of white over the central area. I made the middle of that centre practically white and obliterating the distant buildings. As I worked, I wiped off any excess with a cloth so that the paint was quite translucent. Needless to say I accidentally whitened the edges of the foreground elements (LH Flats, fence, fir tree, furthest RH house) so had to re-paint those.

STARS
There are still some stars peeping through as I understand this scene is a continuation of the night.

PURPLE TREES
Note I painted the foliage of the left hand apple tree and the fir tree a light purple to give the scene a surreal appeal.

SHADOWS,
Next I painted in some strong shadows. Especially important is the shadow cast by the fir tree. By the way, see how the edge of this shadow changed where it is cast over the path? This change helps to define that the path is a different texture and height from the grass.

REFLECTIONS
And for a final touch I put in some light reflections in all the right hand windows.

ANNLAUG
All the above art work makes it look as if an atomic bomb has just been dropped on the City - but I don’t think we should mention that!
