"Sleepover Planet" THE WINGS

These wings could be permanently on the stage throughout the whole show, forming a false proscenium.
If feasible, I prefer cut-out profile edges on wings. They help to camouflage the fact that they are separate flats and assist in blending in with the backcloth. Besides, there aren't many straight edges in nature.

LEFT HAND WING - "Trees"
Strangely you can safely put in patches of sky in a tree wing (and other elements such as buildings) without the audience querying the fact that in reality they would not be able to see the sky, as the trees behind would blot it out.

Also I have made the trunks of these trees wider on the wing than that on the backcloth (see below)

RIGHT HAND WING - "Ivy Wall"
I occasionally have fun by forcing the perspective using wings to make the stage apparently look deeper. In this case I have made the quoins slightly larger than those on the backcloth. And the tree trunks on the left wing wider too. However you can't get too carried away with this ploy otherwise the audience subconsciously thinks the front items are the usual size, then, when an actor arrives beside the smaller items in the background, they look like giants. I did this 'forcing perspective' idea once with a series of wings on which I had painted receding poles with fish nets drying on them. Suddenly this chorus of 'gigantic' fishermen arrived on the stage in the background. No-one in the audience commented, but I bet they thought they were having the 'head staggers'. (Ulster expression)

THESE WINGS ALWAYS ON STAGE?
Although I suggest these wings stay on stage, as they are, even during Scene Two "Night Sky Above" as they will form a false Proscenium, (Most of the audience won't notice), if you would prefer to hide them, then paint a couple of Night Sky wings to go in front of them.
Or, probably easier, have a length of curtain rail along the top of each and permenantly hang light-weight black material which could be drawn back for the other scenes.

DAMIEN When I took the photos, changed the size, and transferred to jpegs, I did not attempt to keep the foliage colours of these wings the same as the backcloth. However, I would be grateful if you could do so when the time comes for you to take the photos and put them on the 'proper' web site.

In order to show the profile edges of these jpeg wings, I have had to use black. Which means if the user prints these pictures they will have black edges on these wings. The same applies to a few other profile edges on other pages of this web site. I suppose I could have made them gifs and used the transparency facility, but don't think a gif would have worked with these variable colours.
