SCENERY PAINTING FOR THE AMATEUR MUSICAL THEATRE and PANTOMIME
SOUTH PACIFIC - page four
Designed and painted by Brian Willis. Performed by Lisnagarvey Operatic Society (1972?)
The Beach Laundry - Washing Machine and Bloody Mary's kiosk. The cut-outs of palm trees upstage give this scene depth. Backcloth of Bali Ha'i in background.
I have done South Pacific for quite a few companies and when painting a similar backcloth for another group it was the first time I had attempted to use a large commercial airbrush. I wanted to give the island a misty ethereal feel, as if appearing out of the mist. However my airbrushing technique was a disaster and it looked as if someone was burning old tractor tyres on the island. So I dumped the airbrush and started all over again with my normal trusty paint brushes.
