The Beanstalk Cloth with a rostrum in front (See cross
hatching) covered with imitation grass for Jack to start ascending as curtains
slowly close. (Cloth was 28 feet wide by 11 feet high). This main cloth
had a cut-out cloth in front of it |
|
And here is a sketch of the complete layout with that cut-out cloth in
situ. Cutting up an old cloth like this is a useful way of using a tatty
cloth before discarding it. You can't make the edges of the cut-out too
pronounced otherwise the canvas starts to sag and curl up. In a large professional
theatre this could be solved by supporting the edges on a net which would
be invisible to the audience but you couldn't do that in a small hall where
the audience is practically on top of the scenery. |
