SCENERY PAINTING FOR THE AMATEUR MUSICAL THEATRE and PANTOMIME
ALADDIN Coleraine 2011 page three
Backcloths designed and painted by Brian Willis.
Set Constructed by Sean Magee and Hamish Grant
Performed by Coleraine Provincial Players (2011)
CAFE INTERIOR

Cloth 20 feet wide by eleven feet high. One foot missing from either side in this photo as I could not get back far enough. 2.5 ltr paint pot for scale.

I like to give the eye an 'escape route'. Hence the stairs leading out of the picture. Hint at "there's more" by only having part of an element in the painting, in this case the fan on the wall.

And the open door way gave me a nice excuse to use a misty blue to add distance and contrast to the set.

The lampshades help to give depth as they overlap what is behind.

By the way that vase in the corner is a slight copy of the Chinese one that fetched 43 million. A news event which happened whilst I was painting this cloth.
