SCENERY PAINTING FOR THE AMATEUR MUSICAL THEATRE and PANTOMIME
TITLE - SLEEPING BEAUTY - page one
Backcloths designed and painted by Brian Willis
Performed by Bushmills Primary Players at the School in January 2006

Castle Interior. Cloth is 17 feet wide and 7 feet high. So I designed a cinemascope ratio picture. Like the James Bond films which always use lots of low ceilings and wide vistas. This cloth is an excercise in light, reflected light, reflections, shadows and perspective! I love to give myself a challenge.
The steps were worked out using masking tape and lots of running down into the hall to see if the geometry looked right.
The dark area at the top of the stairs was done using a sponge dipped in a very thinned-down black water solution and the area gone over several times until I had the right darkness.
The shafts of light were done with a dry five-inch brush. I cleaned off the excess white first on a piece of spare hardboard.
The white misting of the top of the stairs was done using a sponge dipped in a thin solution of white and (like the black) the area gone over several times until I had blurred out the detail enough to my satisfaction.
Observant viewers will note the red carpet goes smack into the pillar on the left! Big mistake.
My latest 'style' is to put a little yellow at the base of blue skies.

The eye line/horizon line is two feet from the bottom of the cloth in this instance.
