JACK AND THE BEANSTALK (Hullabaloo) Page two
Sets Designed, built and painted by Brian Willis
Performed by the Mr. Hullabaloo Children's Theatre,
at the Courtyard Theatre, Ballyearl. Northern Ireland. December 2010

THE GIANT

I was constrained in my size of flats by the Production Company having a nine foot long load section van in which to transport the set. So this Giant I built in five overlapping sections which were bolted together on arrival at the Theatre.

It was decided that we should have only the top half of the Giant visible, as if he is sitting at his breakfast table. This meant our eleven foot high piece inferred the Giant was much bigger than that. (Photo includes me for scale and yes I do have another job at Christmas!)
The eyelids open and close; the eyeballs move from side to side; the mouth opens and shuts; and the arm moves up and down to thump the table. All worked by levers and ropes at the back.

And here he is on stage during one of the Dress Rehearsals. Jack is with the Princess (Amy O Dwyer) The Giant is asleep in this photo. During the Performances there were gentle snoring noises and his mouth opened and shut.
The puppet on top of the Shredded People cornflakes box is the Hen that lays the golden egg.

Eyes open this time, and mouth slightly open.

The Dame was played by Richard Loosemore.

Dame is clutching Jingles the puppet.
