I like to give the "eye" an escape from a picture (and an air of mystery). Hence this arch with just a hint of what's outside. I also like to use shadows to define texture. Hence the shadow of the coffin lid which partly obscures the text. The shadow also defines the floor tiles and where those tiles meet the wall. Note the crack in the arch to also define the planes which make up that arch. (End of art lesson!)
