SCENERY PAINTING FOR THE AMATEUR MUSICAL THEATRE and PANTOMIME
Oliver - The library
Designed and painted by Brian Willis. Sets constructed by Leonard Quigg
Performed by Ballycastle Choral Society (2001)
A couple of book-flats placed together to make a small inset scene. Photographed in the workshop
Flats not photographed at the same size. But the dado/picture rail etc did line up once put together on the stage.
Curtains book flat
Fireplace book flat
Once on the stage, this left hand flat was twisted further around to make a straight wall at the back. Curtains, glazing bars, pelmet - all painted trompe l'oeil This was to be a short inset scene so no time for niceties like setting a fire-surround. It all had to be painted trompe l'oeil onto the flat. Everything here is painted on- thicknesses, shadow of the candles etc. Nothing is 3D. I got in a muddle with the geometry perspective of the clock on the mantelpiece. It is supposed to look central! . I hate painting fire flames. Always look so artificial. I know of a lighting man who solved the problem with a very narrow beam of red flickering light trained on the painted flames.
Parlour book flat

And here's another bookflat inset scene for "The Workhouse Parlour"

Photo taken during the dress rehearsal. That gap just to the left of the "bricks" was sorted before the actual show.

Oh how I hate microphones and stands!
